Not only is it a new year but it is also a new decade, and we hope it is one full of health and happiness for you.
Most people set a new year’s resolution during this time of year (and by February have usually have broken it…guilty as charged) but we’re not into that here, we just want to have fun and explore our beautiful area.
So for the start of 2020 we’re giving you a list of 10 attractions with think you should visit in 2020!
We’re lucky in Newark, Southwell & Sherwood Forest that we have so many brilliant attractions and therefore we encourage you to explore our websites to discover even more attractions to visit!
This year marks 100 years since the beautiful Palace Theatre opened her doors. In July 1920 businesswoman Emily Blagg built this stunning theatre and since then its stage has been full of spectacular productions and has marked itself as the hub of entertainment in Newark.
This year to celebrate its centenary, the Palace Theatre have put on a selection of special events. This is alongside their fantastic programme of productions that include Strictly’s Vincent Simone and Ian Waite, John Challis, Menopause The Musical 2, Rapunzel – A Tangled Musical Adventure and of course the Palace Theatre’s magical pantomime – Snow White.
Additionally, if you buy tickets for any show displayed in their brochure, you will receive free entry to the National Civil War Centre for up to two people in January!
On the 8th February The Workhouse in Southwell opens its doors for the season. 2020 promises to be an exciting year, with intriguing events to explore and more history to discover.
The Workhouse is the best preserved example of the hundreds of workhouses built across the country and the National Trust have carefully preserved this incredible building to detail the history of our welfare system. Take a welcome tour with one of The Workhouse’s amazing volunteers, take a step back in time in the main building and explore the recently conserved Firbeck Infirmary.
The home of Robin Hood. The heart of countless legends. The place to begin your own adventure.
The RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre have kept the legend of Robin Hood and their Merry Men alive as they carefully look after this beautiful ancient woodland. In 2020 come and see the Major Oak for yourself and explore one of the walks and trails to explore the full beauty of the woodland – you may never know you may be walking in Robin Hood’s footsteps.
The visitor centre also have a whole range of events you can get involved in and regularly update their calendar with exciting activities the whole family can enjoy, from guided walks, to craft activities and even some star gazing!
Newark Castle has stood on the banks of the River Trent for over 900 years and has had many incarnations from an Anglo-Saxon Motte and Bailey to the stunning stone construction it is today. Whilst the castle is partially destroyed, she is a reminder of Newark’s turbulent history and continues to be a striking presence on Newark’s landscape.
Today visitors can explore the grounds including the stunning fabulous Victorian gardens and stand in the Gatehouse where King John famously took his last breathe in 1216. Visitors can also explore the King John and Knights Templar exhibitions, please ring the Visitor Information Centre for availability and up to date times.
With its twin pepperpot towers, Southwell Minster continues to be a highlight in Southwell’s picturesque landscape, as it has done for over 900 years. With its rich history and stunning architecture there is always something new to discover every time you visit. We particularly love the beautiful stained glass windows and the incredible medieval carvings, known as the Leaves of Southwell, in the Chapter House.
Additionally, if you would like to explore the intricate and depth history of the Minster we highly recommend you join one of the Stewards guided tours, they really know their stuff!
We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to country parks in the area! In 2020 discover Rufford Abbey’s full history, from its origins as a 12th century Cistercian monastery to its period as a Jacobean era family home, whilst also exploring its beautiful parkland.
Today explore the Abbey’s romantic ruins and discover the beautiful nature on display on one of their walks or trails. Additionally if you’ve got little ones to entertain Rufford Abbey have an excellent Adventure Play area as well as seasonal events the whole family can get involved in.
Plunge deep into the heart of one of Britain’s most significant conflicts at the National Civil War Centre. Explore how brother could turn on brother, the aftermath of such a deadly war and how one once all-powerful monarch lost his head to the axe man!
With excellent exhibitions, fun interactive games and a variety of replica civil war outfits for everyone to try on, the National Civil War Centre is a brilliant museum to explore. Additionally, with their brilliant calendar of events, there is always something new, fun and exciting to immerse yourself in at the Civil War Centre.
Thoresby Park boasts extensive grounds, covering over 1,000 acres of rich and unspoilt countryside, with a range of facilities and attractions – making it a lovely spot to visit all year around.
Take one of their trails, either on foot or by cycle, and discover the beauty of the estate for yourself and explore their Victorian courtyard which is home to a variety of shops, workshops, a military museum and the acclaimed Gallery featuring regional, national and international artists. Additionally, with their full calendar of events, it’s perfect for the whole family!
Located on a 16-acre section of the former World War Two airfield RAF Winthorpe, Newark Air Museum showcases a diverse collection of aircraft and cockpit sections. Immerse yourself in the history of aviation, touring the many aeroplanes, helicopters, aero engines and exhibits.
Additionally, take a look around the museum’s impressive shop – described by regular shoppers as the ‘best specialist aviation outlet in the Midlands’ – and explore one of their special events including their incredibly popular Cockpit-Fest!
