10 Things to do in and around Newark
The charming market town of Newark is fast becoming a popular destination for day-trippers thanks to a wide variety of things to do not only for adults, but for the younger set too.
Newark and the surrounding area is not only steeped in history, but thanks to the picturesque River Trent and outlying countryside, it also offers a variety of activities to suit every visitor.
1.Antiques and collectables
On Mondays and Thursdays and on the last Saturday of each month the quaint Newark marketplace comes alive with hundreds of antiques and collectables’ stalls. From old vinyl to vintage fabrics; from brassware to brooches, it’s guaranteed there will be something to take your fancy.
Set in the middle of the famous Sherwood Forest with over 150 acres of woodland to play in, this is the ultimate location for those looking for a more active stay in the Newark area. With everything from Clay Pigeon Shooting, 4 x 4 off road activities, quad biking, archery and paintball to name but a few, Adrenalin Jungle will keep you active throughout your stay in the area.
Take to the treetops and zip wire across Sherwood Forest at 20 miles per hour; take your chances on an all-terrain Segway to see the forest or send the kids up into the clouds on a treetop adventure or see them smile on a net playground experience. This is great for a family day out and it is only 18 miles from Newark.
An excellent destination for anyone interested in English history. The centre concentrates on the Roundhead uprising from 1643 to 1646. It goes one step further taking you into the heart of Newark, with its ‘smart trail’ option, which you can follow on your tablet or smart phone. It takes in Newark Castle, St Mary Magdalene’s Church and the Queen’s Sconce.
5. Kirkfields Equestrian Centre
This riding school is located just a few miles outside of Newark near the town of Mansfield. The centre offers a variety of experiences to suit all ages and abilities including a picturesque trekking experience through the famous beauty spot of Cresswell Crags.
Set out from Newark Northgate station following the trackbed of the old Newark to Bottesford railway, arriving in the pretty village of Cotham. It takes about an hour and forty minutes to do and is popular with keen walkers and cyclists alike.
This is a petting farm with a difference. Just half an hour from Newark on the Farnsfield Rd towards Mansfield. Not only does it have the conventional farm animals like goats and chickens, it has birds of prey and reptiles too. The farm also has an impressive climbing area and outdoor playground for the younger set.
8. Castle and Minster
Newark has the castle and Southwell has the minster, both well worth a visit. It is a good idea to do both on your visit to the area, starting at the medieval minster in Southwell, which opens at 10am, breaking for lunch in Newark and then taking in the views of the Castle and grounds in the afternoon.
Walk up the Pauper’s Path and go back in time with this National Trust treasure that accurately depicts the life and times of those banished to the workhouse. This foreboding red brick Victorian building is in Southwell, about a 20-minute drive from Newark.
10. The Independents
If you love to shop, you’ll find a wide range of independent retailers, high-end shops, tasty restaurants and characterful coffee shops dotted around both Newark and Southwell. The Buttermarket in Newark is an undercover arcade with beautiful Victorian architecture that links the Market Place to Middlegate and is home to an eclectic mix of businesses from Tambo Lounge with its vegan and gluten-free options to Iguazu with its collection of Fair Trade clothing, jewellery and furniture. Just down the road from Newark, Southwell is proud to include several award-winning retailers. You’ll find everything from interior design luxuries and handmade soaps and chocolates, to top brand clothing, wine, exclusive gifts and everything inbetween, all complimented by plenty of places to eat and drink. The perfect place to visit and relax in beautiful surroundings.
Newark and its surrounds is the hidden gem of Nottinghamshire and with two stations bringing in regular trains from neighbouring towns and counties, it will give you a day-out or mini-break to remember.
