Heritage Open Days: Newark Cemetery Chapel Interpretation Centre – Their Legacy Lives On

September 15, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

The chapel in Newark Cemetery will be open with members of the Friends of Newark Cemetery on hand to help locate graves.

There will also be a display in the Chapel entitled “Their Legacies Live On!”

The Friends of Newark Cemetery (FoNC) are proud to be able to help promote Newark’s beautiful and historic cemetery, which truly is a haven of peace & tranquillity in the heart of our town. During the Heritage Open Days period, the Cemetery Chapel will be open as usual on Thursday, September 15th. Volunteers will be on hand to help you locate a specific grave within the Cemetery. All records will be on hand going back to 1856. So you can find the final resting place of family members, loved ones, friends or local celebrities. This includes graves or cremations in the Garden of Remembrance. As well as undertaking Grave searches, FoNC members will also be on hand to talk to visitors and answer questions about the Cemetery, its history and some of the notable residents who are laid to rest there.

There will also be a display in the Chapel entitled “Their Legacies Live On!” This will feature some of the people who have been laid to rest in Newark Cemetery over the years, who during their lives played a huge part in making Newark the town that it is today, leaving legacies that are still very much in evidence today. These include amongst others, industrialists, politicians, war heroes, civic dignitaries and sportsmen.
