Spooky Season in Newark & Sherwood

Double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble! It’s that time of year again (I know, where has 2019 gone?), where the scary movies are on TV, houses are decorated with pumpkins and skeletons and children are dressed up as their favourite spooky characters (or more likely these days, Marvel Superhero).
Ask any of my friends and family members and they will tell you I absolutely love this time of year. When I was little, I loved watching the Disney movies including Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown, and obviously eating copious amounts of sweets. As I’ve gotten older I’ve loved decorating my house and scaring myself silly watching scary movies with friends!
Halloween is a brilliant time of year for everyone, and in Newark & Sherwood we have some exciting events that all of the family can get involved in.

Rufford Abbey’s Country Park – Annual Halloween Monster Hunt
12th October – 2nd November
With a building as old as Rufford Abbey, things are bound to go bump in the night…
This Halloween Rufford Abbey have a special trail designed for all ages and family fun – the Park Rangers are in need of your help as they need you to hunt down the creatures, ghouls and ghosts and restore harmony to the Park! Grab your family and create your own ghostbusting team, follow the map into the haunted hideaways and creepy woods to find out what’s the cause of Rufford’s strange happenings.
£2 per trail from the Visitor Information Office.
Sherwood Forest – Spooky Sherwood Halloween Trail
12th October – 3rd November
Get spooky at Sherwood Forest this Halloween with their Spooky Sherwood Halloween Trail. Wonder through the magnificent autumn woodland searching for spooky clues, ready to claim your reward at the end!
£2 per trail, available at the Visitor Centre. Please also note that a standard car parking charge of £4 applies.
National Civil War Centre – Magic Museum
19th October – 3rd November
The National Civil War Centre are embracing all things magical during spooky season this year with their Magic Museum events. Get spell-blindingly crafty with their family craft activity – Strange Shadow Sorcery and don’t forget the ‘annual lecture’ from Professor Edvard Von Goosechaser, where he will be looking at some embarrassing, and hilarious, examples of supposed 17th century sorcerers.
These activities are perfect fun for all of the family to enjoy, especially with their spook-tacular family discount; any group including a paying child receives 20% of admission!
Thoresby Park – The Thoresby Trail of Wizardry, Witchcraft, Sorcery and Spells

Have you got a little witch or wizard absolutely obsessed with learning about casting spells and brewing potions? Head over to Thoresby Academy of Wizardry this Halloween to be sorted into your house, find your animal companion and explore their magical park.
There is also a prize for the best fancy dress, so there is no excuses, get your wizard hats, your skeleton masks and head over to Thoresby Park this Halloween.
£2 per trail, available at the Visitor Centre.
Southwell Workhouse – Curious Pumpkin Trail
20th – 31st October
What’s Halloween without a pumpkin? Carve them, eat them, decorate your house with them; they are the staple of spooky season. Explore The Workhouse during the October half term and pick out the perfect pumpkin to take home from their garden.
Also seek out the darkest corners of The Workhouse with their special children’s trail during the half term week.
General admission does apply and trails are £3.
Sherwood Forest – Witches and Warlocks Den Building
29th October
Sherwood Forest is home to many legends, including that of The Wood Witch. The legend goes that if young witches and warlocks can build a big, beautiful forest dwelling…she may offer up a treat! Have you got a witch or warlock who enjoys getting their hands dirting and making things? Head over to the RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre to build and decorate a huge, spooky den before settling in for a story and hot chocolate.
£7.50 per child and children must be accompanied by an adult (grown-ups go free!), booking is also required.
30th & 31st October
The No1. escape room in Newark is being visited by true evil for two nights. For those who want to be thoroughly scared at a Halloween event, this is the one for you. Running on the 30th and 31st October LetsXcape have a very special escape room experience planned, including live actors…There are still booking slots available, so assemble your team and head down to Kelham Hall.
National Civil War Centre – Young Frankenstein in the Tudor Hall

For movie lovers, Halloween is a brilliant time of year; when all the classic (and the not so classic) scary movies appear on our TV. After last year’s sold-out screening of Sleepy Hollow, the National Civil War Centre are putting on Mel Brooks’ cult horror comedy Young Frankenstein as part of their Halloween Film Fright Night!

Sherwood Forest – Sinister Tales of Sherwood

Sherwood Forest has been around for a very long time and therefore these ancient oaks have a story or two to tell, including those of a more sinister nature. Not everyone was a friend of Robin Hood and his merry men, head over to the RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre on Halloween just as the light is fading and join the baddies of Sherwood for a terrifying tour.
