We’re officially in February, which means the first half term of 2020 is just around the corner!

February half term is a great opportunity to explore the area, whether you’ve got little or big kids, there is something for everyone to enjoy. From family-friendly museums, to the great outdoors, Newark and Sherwood Forest have everything you need to have a week of fun.

To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of things you can do during February half term. Quick disclaimer though that with so much to see and do during the half term we haven’t been able to fit everything in, therefore, do have a look around our websites for even more places to visit!

Undercover!

15th – 23rd February | 10am – 5pm | National Civil War Centre

Once again, the National Civil War Centre have a brilliant, family-fun, half term activity you can get involved in! Head to the museum to become sneaky scribes and learn all about the 17th century art of hiding messages in books and letters at their Smuggled Pamphlets and Dangerous Book craft sessions. Whilst there, meet Elizabeth Lilburne, a feisty female, who smuggled political pamphlets even whilst pregnant!

Remember, the museum’s discount – families with a paying child receive 20% off admission throughout the holidays!

Shining Star Trail – RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre

15th – 23rd February | 10am – 3pm | RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre | £2 per trail

Explore the ancient woodlands of Sherwood Forest during February half term with the RSPB’s Shining Star Trail. Celebrate the nature of the star and crack the constellation code! The trail beings at the Visitor Centre and winds its way through the winter woodland.

Fairy February – Thoresby Park

15th– 23rd February | Thoresby Park

Enjoy a month of fairies and woodland sprites at Thoresby Park this February. Take part in their Woodland Fairy and Sprite trail as you venture down pathways and through magical woodland to find out where each of our sprites or fairies live. Solve the riddle, find out what your sprite or fairy name is and win a small prize at the end!

As well as the trail, Thoresby have another series of events you can enjoy from wand making to building a fairy box – keep an eye out on their website and Facebook for more details.

Enchanted Fairy Trail – Rufford Abbey Country Park

15th February – 1st March | 10am – 4pm | £2 per sheet

Continuing on with the theme of fairies, head to Rufford Abbey to take part in their Enchanted Fairy Trail! Put on your fairy wings and follow the trail around Rufford Abbey’s Enchanted Forest! Discover a world of mystery as you hunt down the enchanted miniature houses, find the king and queen of the fairies and walk through Rufford’s wonky archways to find their resident dragon. Don’t forget to tell your secrets to the Rainbow Sunbeam wishing fairy whilst your there!

Junior Parkrun

Every Sunday | 9am | FREE | Sconce and Devon Park or Dukeries Leisure Centre

Have you got a child between 4 – 14 years old that needs to expend a bit of energy in the morning? Loves running in PE? Newark Junior Parkrun is for you! This fun and friendly environment is a lovely opportunity to run 2k, whatever your pace is! Just remember to register before you attend.

Uncover Sherwood Forest with Robin Hood and Maid Marian

16th & 23rd February | 10am – 3.30pm | RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre | £15 per adult | £10 per child | Children under 6 FREE

Experience Sherwood Forest like never before this half term with the heroes themselves: Lady Marian and Robin Hood! They’ll re-tell tales, share secrets and guide you to Robin’s famous tree, the Major Oak. Wonder through the beautiful ancient woodland whilst learning about the days of old from Robin Hood himself! Booking isn’t essential for these events but it is advised.

Hood and Tuck: Outlaw Recruitment Day

16th February | 11am – 12pm, 1pm – 2pm & 2:30am – 3:30am | RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre | £4 per child

Do you what it takes to be an outlaw? Think so? Then head to the RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre on the 16th February as Robin Hood and his good friend Friar Tuck will be in the area, looking for people to join the ranks of their legendary gang! Ask questions and take part in practical demonstrations and leave Sherwood Forest a true outlaw. Booking is required for this event.

Forest School

18th February | 9.15am – 12pm | Sconce and Devon Park | £5 per child | Call 01636 650000 to book a place

Enjoy the great outdoors this February half term with Forest School at Sconce and Devon Park. Open to children between the ages of 5 and 10, forest school involves learning and discover that is in tune with nature and the great outdoors! Take part in fun activities at Sconce and Devon Park, get a bit muddy and enjoy just being outside.

Nest Box Building – RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre

18th February | 11am – 12:15pm & 12:30pm – 2pm | RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre | £8 per box

Get crafty this half term with the RSPB Sherwood Forest’s nest box building activity as part of National Nest Box Week! Build a home for the feathered friends in your garden, with the RSPB’s helpful and friendly staff on board to help. You’ll also have the chance to join a short free guided bird walk to learn about the residents your new bird box could soon have.

Outlaw Day

20th February | 10am – 3.30pm | RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre | £15 per adult | £10 per child | Children under 6 FREE

Join Robin Hood and become an outlaw for the day, as you listen to tales and stories and learn how to become a legendary outlaw just like Robin Hood! Presented by Notts Outdoors Education team, join some of Robin Hood’s Merry Men for a full day of activities including a guided walk through the forest, medieval medallion making, den building and archery.

Family Volunteering Day

21st February | 1pm – 3pm | RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre | FREE

Fancy a family day out with a twist? Have a fun day out and help the environment out with RSPB Sherwood Forest’s family volunteering day! Plant trees in Sherwood Forest, all the tools and information will be provided and they’re the perfect size for some small hands. Remember to come back and check on your tree in the future!
