Heritage Open Days 2021

Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,000 local people and organisations and thousands of volunteers. Every year in September places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history.
It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE.

This September, discover the hidden history and culture of Newark and Sherwood with our exciting events!

Newark

Experience the history of Newark with a Civil War tour around the town, or venture into the National Civil War Centre for two spotlight tours highlighting some of the fascinating objects on display. You can also discover the history of the Palace Theatre Newark, the Newark Heritage Barge’ Leicester Trader’ and the Newark Town Hall. Then, explore the town’s history with several town walks and go behind the scenes at our Resource Centre to uncover some of the 95,000 objects in our collection.

Southwell

In Southwell, go behind the scenes of the Dean of Southwell’s Georgian Residence and Garden and join one of the Southwell Minster’s knowledgeable guides as they show you around the world-renowned Chapter House.

Sherwood Forest
