See a historic railway signal box and try your hand on the levers. Learn what a signal box is for, and what the signalman did.

A signalman was a responsible job with a huge safety role. Between the wars, there were around 15,000 signal boxes, and this is a way of life that has almost completely disappeared. Learn how the equipment worked and how it developed to prevent repetitions of railway accidents. You are welcome to try your hand pulling the levers or ringing the block bell.
See what we have done to restore the box to its condition in the 1950s.
They have recently been given access to photos of most of the stations between Nottingham and Lincoln and are preparing photo display boards to be displayed along the line. Before they are installed, they will all be on display at the Lowdham signal box for Heritage Open Days.
