Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestera

June 25, 2022

Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Southwell Minster on Saturday 25th June at 7.30pm with an exciting concert of music including Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony.  This symphony was written during the time of Stalin’s ‘terror’ when even musician’s lives were in danger, but this music was a huge success, after Shostakovich had withheld his previous symphony.  It is considered that Shostakovich hid his true feelings in the music which is a powerful and moving work.

The concert will open with a one-movement tone poem by Jennifer Higdon, an American composer who wrote Blue Cathedral in response to her brother’s death.  It an uplifting piece of music and has proved her most popular work, premiered in 2000.

Ben Goldscheider, a BBC Young Musician finalist in 1996 joins the Orchestra for Glière’s Horn Concerto.  Glière was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, attended the Moscow Conservatoire, and taught Prokofiev at one time, but is little known here as he never travelled in Europe. Ben is an acclaimed horn player who performs both as a soloist and chamber musician and we look forward to welcoming him back to perform with our orchestra.

Tickets for the concert, £20, £16, (£5 for Students and Children) are available online from ticketsource.co.uk and telephone 0333 666 3366.  They are also available from the Cathedral Shop, Southwell 01636 812933 and on the door.  Seating is unreserved.

Do join them for a Summer Concert in the beautiful and spacious Southwell Minster!
