Join Dr Stuart Jennings for an eye-opening discussion of the life of Colonel Francis Thornhagh of Fenton. At the time of his death at the Battle of Preston (1648), Colonel Thornhagh was one of the rising figures in the Parliamentarian ranks. Commander of all the Parliamentarian cavalry in Nottinghamshire, and based in Nottingham, he saw extensive military service both within the county and across the country. In his report to Parliament in 1648, Oliver Cromwell said of his dead colleague ‘he was a man as faithful and gallant in your service as any’. To coincide with the first ever full biography of this long overlooked Nottinghamshire figure, this talk will examine his career, uncovering the man, the soldier and the politician as well as his evolving relationship with Oliver Cromwell over the years 1643 to 1648.
