Acclaimed photographer Peter Marlow (1952-2016) was commissioned in 2008 by Royal Mail to photograph six Anglican Cathedrals to mark the 300th anniversary of St Paul’s Cathedral for a collection of commemorative stamps. So enticed by the beauty of the Cathedrals, he decided to shoot all 42. He chose to photograph each one in the same way, looking down the nave, lit only with natural light at dawn. The result distils the spirit of the English Cathedral, highlighting not only their often massive scale and timeless architecture, but also their intimate beauty.
