Festive family fun!

December is such a fun month for families, full of Christmas parties, school nativities and two school-free weeks around the big day! But at Visit Newark and Sherwood, we also understand how hectic the month can be.

Therefore, we’ve compiled a handy list of things you can do over the Christmas break when you’ve got kids in the mix!

Palace Theatre Newark

What is Christmas without a brilliant pantomime? This year the Palace Theatre Newark is bringing to life the magical story of Dick Whittington and His Cat. This spectacular show is full of sparkling customers, bags of panto fun and hilarious slapstick comedy! There are still tickets available, so book now to avoid disappointment and join in the fun at the Theatre this December!

Sherwood Pines and Go Ape

Need to get the little ones out of the house to blow off some steam? We completely understand. Sherwood Pines is a great location to take your family whether they want to enjoy a magical walk through the ancient forest, a bike ride or want to traverse the treetops at Go Ape.

Newark Air Museum

Perfect if you have some history buffs in your family, both young and old, Newark Air Museum is great to explore for a couple of hours. As one of the UK’s largest volunteer-managed aviation museums, visitors can fully immerse themselves in aviation history, touring the many aeroplanes, helicopters, aero-engines and exhibits. With most attractions being housed in hangars and under covered display areas, it’s the perfect place for a visit, whatever the weather.

Rufford Abbey Country Park

Rufford Abbey is an ideal place to explore during December; there is nothing more satisfying than wandering around a beautiful country park wrapped up in coats and scarves. It’s also excellent for children as they’ve got acres to safely run around, including Rufford Abbey’s excellent adventure play area where their imagination can run wild.

Thoresby Park

Much like Rufford Abbey, Thoresby is a brilliant place to let your kids create memories amongst nature – crafting their own adventures from the wildlife around them. But, of course, for those who are perhaps a little older or have a little more energy, you can always hire bikes and explore the park.

National Civil War Centre

The National Civil War Centre is incredibly family-friendly and is a brilliant place to take kids during December. Discover the history behind one of Britain’s most significant conflicts and how the Civil War changed lives in Newark and across the country! Discover real-life stories of families split between the Roundhead and Royalist causes!

With real objects, digital interactives, large screen cinema, plus a delicious café and well-stocked gift shop on site, the National Civil War Centre makes a great day out!

RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre

Explore the home of Robin Hood this December with your little ones and begin your own legendary adventure in the ancient woodlands. Pretend to be a band of mischievous outlaws who rob from the rich to give to the poor and make the Sheriff of Nottingham’s life a nightmare!

LetsXcape Together Board Games and Events Café

LetsXcape Together is the perfect place to take kids who love a board game adventure. With 100s of titles to choose from, including classic games, roleplaying adventure games and even military strategy games, you will find something for everyone to enjoy.

Why not spend a gloomy December day or two with friends and family, laughing, bonding and having fun with a bite to eat and drink over a good board game?
